Idaho signs four in early JC signing period

New coach Paul Petrino met with the media today to discuss the junior college kids he’s signed as well as recruiting in general his first two weeks on the job.

First, the commits.

Idaho has received Letters of Intent from two running backs and two linebackers, positions Petrino felt were immediate needs. Idaho graduated three linebackers from 2012 and starting running back Ryan Bass.

Jerrel Brown (6-foot, 220 pounds from San Mateo) and Kris Olugbode (5-foot-9 200 pounds from City College of San Francisco) were signed to add immediate depth to running back to compete with senior James Baker and sophomores Todd Handley and Justin Parkins.

Olugbode rushed for 6.2 yards-per-carry in 2012, but up through his tenth game of the season hadn’t received a scholarship offer. He wasn’t offered out of high school either.

At the linebacker spot Idaho signed Marc Millan of Santa Ana College and Eric Tuipulotu from San Mateo.

Petrino said Idaho would continue to address immediate areas of need through the Junior college route but prefers to build for the future through high school recruiting. He noted the cornerback position as one area he expects to be solidified with JC signees.

Interesting comment of note from Petrino was on his quarterback situation. Petrino said he is looking to bring in a JC quarterback to compete for the starting job while also signing a high school quarterback to come in and redshirt.

He expects to enter the spring with the three scholarship quarterbacks on roster with one of them emerging from the spring as the starter to compete with the JC quarterback which Petrino expects to join the team for fall practice.
