Just mom and me

She washed my clothes, drove me to baseball practice and bought me my first legal drink in Las Vegas.

Now my mom is coming to Moscow for her first Moms Weekend and I am just as excited as the first time we went to Disneyland.

Sure, there’s no beer tasting or football game (that actually counts), but events like the wine and cheese tasting and arboretum tours are a great way to spend time with mom.

Being from Spokane I have the ability to go home and visit my family whenever I get the smallest feeling of homesickness, but that is not the case for a large portion of students who will spend time with their moms this weekend.

Some students may have to be a little more polite than normal or take a weekend off from doing some unnamed activities in town, but the time spent with a parent is worth taking a weekend off from partying.

The chance to introduce your mom to all those friends you always talk about, take her to get a brat from NY Johnny’s or watch the Vandal football team’s final spring scrimmage.

Unless your mom went to University of Idaho, coming to Moscow is an experience she can’t have outside the Palouse. Show your mom around, take her to all your favorite restaurants and introduce her to the people who surround you.

This weekend also provides an opportunity to give back to the person who has provided so much. Whether it’s lunch at the “bagel shop” or a drink at the Corner Club, treat your mom to something nice. I guarantee it will mean more to her than you think.

Treat this weekend as a chance to spend one-on-one time with your mom, and not an opportunity to squeeze her for a few groceries at Winco Foods– although you shouldn’t turn away free groceries.

For your mom this is just like when you were a child and got to go to work with her. This is a take your mom to school weekend and just like it was for you as a kid, it will be a highlight of her year.
