Outdoor Program heads to Cannon Beach

The University of Idaho Outdoor Program will take part in the stay and surf event in Cannon Beach, Ore.,this weekend. Trevor Fulton, outdoor program coordinator said that this is a great trip for students who want an introduction to the program.
The cost for students is $75, with 12 students signed up to attend this weekend’s events. The group will leave early Friday morning so they can make the most of the trip.
The Outdoor Program rents surfboards from a surf shop in Cannon Beach that has worked with UI for the past couple of years. The shop owner Mark Mekenas said the shop gives huge discounts on rentals to UI Outdoor Program participants during the three-day trip because they travel in a big group.
“It’s been great,” Mekenas said. “They are one of the top five schools to work with. The kids are great and fun to work with.”
The program sends a group to the event twice a year. At this event, participants have the opportunity to both surf and hike. Fulton said that it is nice because people who want to surf can surf, and people who want to hike can hike.
Surfers rent their own surfboards, and get lessons while there. Fulton thinks that this trip has the potential to create lifelong connections to the University of Idaho.
“This trip is a great way to get students involved in the outdoor program,” Fulton said. “It is an event that introduces students to a beautiful part of the outdoors, and could create connections for life.”
