Women’s golf struggles on prestigious course

The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minn., is more than 100 years old and played host to the 1908 U.S. Open. It also played host to the Idaho women’s golf team Monday and Tuesday and gave them a little trouble as well.

The second tournament of the fall season turned out to be a difficult one for the Vandals as they finished in last place, 107 shots over par. Kent State finished first out of the group of 12 schools, shooting 38 shots over par.

However there was a bright spot for the Vandals in junior Leilanie Kim, who finished tied for 16th at 15 over par. She improved each round of the tournament shooting a 78-77-76 for a total of 231 through three rounds of play.

As for the rest of the Vandals, Amy Hasenoehrl finished 41st with a 24 over par, Cassie McKinley finished tied for 49th with a 29 over par, Rachel Choi tied for 59th with a 39 over par and Mary Sweeney was 63rd with a 41 over par.

“We definitely realized a lot of our weaknesses, and we’re going to learn from it” Idaho coach Julie Johnson.

The Vandals will be closer to home in their next tournament when they go to Pullman to compete in the WSU Inland Cup on Monday and Tuesday.

The WSU Inland Cup will feature 14 schools, including the Vandals and host Washington State. The other teams include Boise State, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, Oregon State, Portland State, Sacramento State, Seattle, and Weber State. Play starts Monday, Sept. 23 at Palouse Ridge in Pullman.
