UI freshman drowns in Dworshak Reservoir

A University of Idaho freshman drowned Saturday while swimming to an island near the Freeman Creek Boat Launch in Dworshak State Park near Orofino.

Bruce Pitman, UI dean of students, said a small group of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity members went on a camping trip near Dworshak State Park and decided to swim to an island in Dworshak Reservoir.

“It is my understanding that they made it and were returning to shore,” Pitman said.

It was while returning to shore that Preston W. Vorhauer experienced distress and couldn’t continue swimming.

“A couple of guys swimming nearby tried to come to his aid but were not able to help him,” Pitman said. “He went under and drowned.”

Pitman said the funeral will take place Saturday in Kamiah, where Vorhauer is from.

“There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Life Center Church. The main service will be at 12 p.m.,” Pitman said. “Following the main service there will be a dinner at the Valley View Church of the Nazarene.”

Pitman said Lambda Chi Alpha will have their own private
ceremony.

“We are deeply concerned for the students who were actually present at the time of the accident,” Pitman said. “We have offered counseling and support services and will continue to do so. We also connected with Preston’s family and offer support to them.”Students who are in need of counseling can visit the UI Counseling and Testing Center or call 208-885-6716.

University of Idaho and Lambda Chi Alpha family, we are so sorry for your loss this last weekend of Mr. Vorhauer at Dworshak Reservoir. Tragic accidents do happen and they impact all those involved. We cannot bring Preston or others back, but maybe we can prevent others from similar tragedies through some type of water safety education or reminders targeted to the young adult age group.

If the University of Idaho and/or Lambda Chi Alpha is interested in potentially partnering in something like this, please feel free to contact me so we can discuss.

Again, my heartfelt sypathies and prayers for family and friends.

    Sincerely
    Paul J. Pence
