On Thursday, April 2, the University of Idaho men’s golf team traveled to Seattle to compete in the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational Presented by L.A.B. Golf. The team placed second, which is their best finish since Sept. 29, when they placed first at the SIUE Dolenc Invitational.
Senior Josh McCartain looked like himself as he went four-under par and tied for sixth place and was named the Co-Big Sky Player of the Week. Eastern Washington’s Hogan Park shared the award with him since he also tied for sixth. McCartain is the highest-ranked player in the Big Sky Conference with three weeks left in the regular season.
The rest of the team played well as senior Samuel Johnson tied for 11th with a score of three-under, which is only one score lower than McCartain, who placed five spots above him. Graduate student Dalton Dean tied for 23rd with a score of one over par. Senior Joe Sykes tied for 26th with a score of two-over par and freshman Henrik Koglin tied for 43rd with a score of seven-over par.
The performance from the team was a huge step up from the past few events. However, the competition was not as good. The Vandals are able to compete with good teams and have an opportunity to prove themselves against a bigger school as the next time the team plays will be at the Battle for Idaho on April 20-21 at Hillcrest Country Club in Boise.
