The University of Idaho track and field team kicked off its outdoor season in impressive fashion this past weekend at the West Coast Relays, building on the momentum of an incredible indoor campaign. After an unforgettable indoor track season, the Vandals showed up in Fresno. California, to prove they are more than ready to carry that success into the spring.
After the nearly 1,000-mile trip, the Idaho Vandals javelin team geared up for what would be an incredible showcase. Leading the way for Idaho was sophomore standout Baylee Wroble, who delivered a strong performance in the women’s javelin. Wroble secured silver with a 44.28- meter throw, continuing to establish herself as one of the team’s top competitors in the event. Her consistency and early-season success signal a promising outdoor season ahead.
On the men’s side of the javelin, Blake Sturgis made a statement of his own in the javelin. Last week, at the Sam Adams Classic Meet in Spokane, Washington, Sturgis won the Big Sky Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, after dominating the men’s javelin with a 66.62-meter throw. Sturgis would continue his stellar season as he earned bronze with a season best throw of 68.28 meters. His performance not only marked a continued strong start to the outdoor season but also demonstrated his potential to be a key contributor for the Vandals as the season continues.
The West Coast Relays served as a perfect transition from indoor to outdoor competition, giving athletes the opportunity to adjust to new conditions and longer events. For the Vandals, it was clear that the team’s hard work during the indoor season has translated well, with multiple new athletes showing early season strength and confidence.
With the outdoor season now officially underway, the Vandals are setting their sights on continued improvement and strong performances across the upcoming meets. The team will split up next weekend to compete in two different events, allowing athletes to maximize their given opportunities and gain valuable experience. Each meet becomes another chance for athletes to build a winning culture and prove that their impressive indoor success was only the beginning of something bigger.
The Vandals will split their talents to perform at the Whitworth Peace Meet in Spokane, Washington, on Friday, April 3, and at the Stanford Invite in Stanford, California, from April 3-4.
