On March 2, the University of Idaho men’s golf team traveled to Fresno, California, to play in the Watney Invitational. The Vandals finished 10th out of 14th for their lowest place of the season
Their success has been due to the performances of seniors Josh McCartain and Sam Johnson, who have been consistent players for the team all season.
The top finisher for the team was Johnson, who tied for 22nd with a score of six-over after he went over the first two rounds and even on the third round. Johnson has been on and off all season, with many good finishes and many poor finishes.
The second finisher for the Vandals was McCartain, who had the worst finish of his season, where he tied for 31st with a score of seven-over. McCartain has by far been the best player for the team all season; however, this performance does not reflect the rest of his season whatsoever.
The last three finishers for the team were graduate Dalton Dean, who tied for 33rd with a score of eight-over, Henrik Koglin, who tied for 40th with a score of 10-over, and senior Joe Sykes, who tied for 74th with a score of 24-over. Overall, a disappointing showing for the Vandals compared to the rest of the season. The Vandals also had one individual player, sophomore Carter Frisby, who tied for 70th with 22-over par.
The Vandals have four more events before the Big Sky Conference tournament, but the next stop is Bandon, Oregon, where the Vandals will host the 17th Bandon Dunes Championship from March 8-10.
