On Tuesday, Feb. 10th, The Idaho Vandals women’s golf team traveled to Litchfield Park, Arizona, for the BGSU Women’s Intercollegiate at Wigwam Blue. This was the first of five events held in the spring season. After the five events, the Big Sky Championship will take place. The Vandals did better than the other Big Sky teams in this event which is a good sign for what’s to come in the championship.

The leader for the Vandals was junior Zoe Newell, who tied for 23rd with a total score of +10 on the day. In the first round, Newell ended five-over and in the second round she ended six-over. However, in the third round she turned it around and went one-under. This last round lock-in from Newell was a big contributor to the Vandals moving up two spots in the leaderboard.

The rest of the team placed as follows: Redshirt senior Boram Jung tied for 27th with a total score of +11, senior Kaylin Johnson tied for 46th with a total score of +17, sophomore Laura Caamano tied for 51st with a total score of +18 and freshman Diya Brar tied for 55th with a total score of +20.

Sophomore Ella Kozak was playing as an individual and she also tied for 55th with a total score of +20. Kozak showed promise in the fall and this performance is not like usual for her.

The team that placed first in the invitational was Texas El Paso, who shot for a total of 863 while Idaho shot for a total of 904, a 41-point differential. Three of the five players from Texas El Paso shot better than Idaho’s leader (Newell) with the number one finisher from the event shooting -3.

The Idaho Vandals women’s golf team is back in action at the GCU Invitational on Feb. 24-25 in Phoenix.
