UI commemorates Native American Heritage Month through various events  

The events cover various topics, from food to preservation and experiences

November is Native American Heritage Month. To commemorate indigenous heritage, the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre and University of Idaho are hosting multiple events.  

Thursday, Nov. 6  

Mariah Gladstone will have a keynote speech at the UI Library from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Gladstone is a member of the Blackfeet and Cherokee tribes and the founder of Indigikitchen, a cooking show centering foods that are indigenous to the Americas. 

Thursday, Nov. 6 

From 2 to 4 p.m., Gladstone will be hosting a cooking demo in the Mary Hall Nicolls Building. Registration is required in advance.  

Monday, Nov. 10 

“Singing Back the Buffalo” (2024), a documentary following indigenous efforts to support the buffalo population in North America, will be shown at 6 p.m. in the Kenworthy. The Vandal Nation Drum Group and James Holt Sr., a member of the Nez Perce tribe, will also be performing at the event. This event is free to attend.  

Friday, Nov. 14 The UI Tribal Nations Student Affairs is holding “Rock Your Moccs” at the TNSA office at noon. Rock Your Moccs is an annual, typically media-based, celebration of American indigenous culture, named after moccasins. A free lunch will be provided.  

Monday, Nov. 17 

“Smoke Signals” (1998) will be shown at the Kenworthy at 6 p.m. “Smoke Signals” is a comedy following two young men living on the Coeur d’Alene reservation, Victor and Thomas, who embark on a road trip from Idaho to Arizona after Victor’s father dies. This film is noteworthy as a feature produced, written and acted out by indigenous people. Admission is free for UI students upon presentation of Vandal ID.
