ASUI introduced five pieces of legislation about club funding requests, community outreach and public events during the ASUI Senate meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Senate bill F25-B03, introduced at the previous meeting, was further discussed.
The bill will give the University of Idaho collegiate chapter of the National Association of Music Education $500 that would be used to partially reimburse members’ conference registration costs. During open forum, the UI NAfME Secretary, Carlie Reid, gave clarification to questions raised by senators at the previous meeting.
Reid said that UI NAfME is planning to attend a conference in Nampa in February. The club has 40 members, and the reimbursement will cut costs 20% for each student.
F25-B03 is the first club funding bill to be proposed after the new club funding system was implemented.
“The students are currenting paying into a pot, which will be uses in February as a negotiation term for lower rates at the event. The registration fees go into that pot,” said Senator Preston Hardcastle, author of F25-B03.
F25-B03 was resubmitted for review by the finance committee.
Resolution F25-R08 was introduced to support students, staff and faculty in voting in the upcoming Moscow city general elections on Nov. 4.
Senators discussed multiple additions to the bill, including resources to inform voters, helping students and staff register to vote and inviting candidates to visit ASUI meetings.
F25-R08 was sent to the policy and resolution committee for review. It will be voted on at the next meeting.
Isabelle Higgins, director of campus involvement, spoke during the public forum about the upcoming Trick or Treat in the Tower. The event will be on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Theopolis Tower dorms.
Higgins said she expects over 700 community members to attend the event. The event will include party games, floor decoration contest judged by ASUI senators and candy.
Senate bill F25-R04 was introduced requesting $200 in funding for the UI Japan Club to help pay for food, and other expenses.
“The $200 will help UI Japan Club create events that promote cross cultural understanding, inclusion, and community involvement among students,” said Senator Zoha Aqeel, sponsor of F25-R04.
Senator Gunner Cavender said the bill needs further clarification on how the money will be used. Cavender asked if there would be opportunities for ASUI to co-host events with UI Japan Club where the funding would be used.
F25-R04 was sent to the finance committee for review.
Senators Charlie Peacock and Cavender said they have been collaborating with clubs to increase club visibility. Peacock is developing workshops to help clubs update their Engage webpages. Engage is a UI operated webpage which contains details for student life events and club information.
ASUI is also currently working on making senator and director profiles for their social media accounts.
There were two resolutions introduced thanking specific groups and organizations for their efforts.
Resolution F25-R07 was introduced to recognize the effort made by all student workers.
“Student workers have a very important role to making sure the university runs smoothly. It promotes appreciation, boosts moral and shows the value of contributions to the University of Idaho’s success and community spirit,” said Aqeel, sponsor of F25-R07.
Resolution F25-R09 was introduced to thank the UI International Programs office, the UI Department of Student Involvement, organizers and volunteers that worked on the Oct. 16 Pumpkin Carving Party.
“Not only did they hold a fun seasonal activity, but the event served as a place where students from all backgrounds could meet, share traditions, and have a deeper sense of belonging at the University of Idaho,” said Aqeel, sponsor of F25-R09.
Both resolutions were sent to the policy and resolutions committee.
ASUI will meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Clearwater-Whitewater room in the ISUB. Meetings are open to the public.
