Bryan Kohberger’s defense team has objected to the state’s request for additional restitution.
The state of Idaho requested additional civil payment from Kohberger on Sept. 22, asking for an additional $20,409.32 for Kristi and Steve Goncalves, the parents of Kaylee Goncalves, and $6,920.32 for Karen Laramie, Madison Mogen’s mother.
A virtual hearing over the restitution request is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. MDT.
The state filed a statement for the expenses under seal, but the funds relate to travel and accommodation expenses, according to Kohberger’s attorneys.

The conviction originally required Kohberger to pay $5,000 to each of the families as civil judgment, and the parties later agreed on an additional $28,956.88 as restitution for funeral expenses.
Kohberger was convicted of murdering Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves and Ethan Chapin in November of 2022, pleading guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary on July 23, 2025.
Kohberger’s defensive team objected to the state’s request on the grounds that the plea agreement previously specified funeral expenses and reimbursed funds through Idaho’s Crime Victim Compensation Fund to be determined within 60 days after the sentencing date. That date was Sept. 21, 2025.
The defense team additionally argued these requested funds do not qualify as “economic loss” in Idaho because the Goncalveses and Larmie received funds through GoFundMe that covered their expenses and that Kohberger has no ability now or ever to pay restitution due to his life sentences.
On Aug. 27, Kohberger agreed to pay over $14,000 to the Crime Victim Compensation Fund, nearly $6,000 to the Chapins and over $8,000 to Jeffrey Kernodle, totaling nearly $30,000. This was in addition to the $270,000 in fines Kohberger was ordered to pay at his sentencing hearing.
Kohberger’s team argued that the only additional receipts to be added to the restitution this fall, within the contractual terms, are those for the urns, and that this additional request does not meet the stipulations of the plea agreement.
