ASUI director of student services Alexa Benitez, President Seyi Arogundade and Vice President Bryant Sitts announced their collaboration with Professor Rebecca Scofield, a representative of America 250, to provide funding to student clubs at the ASUI senate meeting on Sept. 17.

Clubs can earn up to $1,000 in funding by connecting any initiatives, programs or travel opportunities to a commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. Applications are currently available online and more information will be announced at the ASUI meeting on Sept. 30.

America 250 is a non-partisan organization, formed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. According to the University of Idaho America 250 website, the organization seeks to raise awareness, spark conversation and thoughtfully commemorate this milestone in American history.

ASUI director of sustainability Nicole Rice is looking into a new initiative for laundry water conservation on campus. Rice is organizing a tote bag-decorating event on Oct. 9, aimed at helping students “associate Vandal pride with sustainability.”

Resolution F25-R1, which condemns the violence inflicted on Nepalese protesters and was proposed at the previous meeting, passed unanimously. Copies of the resolution will be sent to the appropriate UI entities.

A new resolution, authored by Sen. Pro Tempore Julissa McDowell and sponsored by Sen. Izaak Krohn, was introduced condemning political violence. The resolution was written in direct response to the Sept. 10 assassination of Charlie Kirk, right wing advocate and founder of Turning Point USA.

“I want to show ASUI’s firm stance against political violence and offer condolences to the families of these tragedies,” said Krohn. The bill has moved to the ways and means committee and will be voted on next week.

Bill F25-B01 was introduced to purchase donuts for an ASUI meet-and-greet event that will be held at a later date. The event intends to allow students to get to know their ASUI representatives.

ASUI will meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Clearwater-Whitewater room in the ISUB. Meetings are open to the public.
