Join community members from across the Palouse in Friendship Square this Thursday at 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to celebrate Juneteenth.
Enjoy music, dancing, speakers, a drum circle, pottery-making provided by Terracotta Moscow and free soul food at this family-friendly event.
Carrie Bullock Ben-Yisrael, the director of TRIO Student Support Services at Washington State University, will deliver the keynote speech. She has worked with underrepresented populations in higher education for over 20 years and is deeply passionate about educational access and the pursuit of justice and equity.
Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The date has been a federal holiday since 2021.

The event is organized by Shae Ortega, a WSU Ph.D. student of anthropology and global justice, and Chioma Heim, WSU’s director of advising of the College of Arts and Sciences.
