As one of the final gatherings of the school year, the April 23 ASUI meeting was full of gratitude and congratulations.
Several resolutions were voted on, including one sponsored by Senator Bryan Juarez that sets aside $1,000 in funds from the Senate budget to purchase energy drinks for students. Passing unanimously, the drinks will be handed out at various locations on campus throughout finals week.
Another resolution was in support of a 30×30 initiative for the state of Idaho. This initiative aims to protect at least 30% of Idaho’s land and water by the year 2030.
Sponsored by Senator Andrea Leal, she said “I believe in the importance of getting UI students to care about protecting at least 30% of Idaho’s lands and waters by 2030 and to encourage the governor, legislature and the people to adopt a state level 30×30 conservation target.” The resolution was passed unanimously.

The senate also unanimously passed three resolutions commending outgoing senators Juarez, Alexa Benitez and Anya Zuercher for their time and work in ASUI.
During an open forum, several directors spoke on the upcoming Vandals Against Violence 5k happening April 27 in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Students were encouraged to register, and the public was reminded that volunteers are still needed.
Director of Public Relations Sophia Glass discussed working with Alumni Relations and Career Services to organize Sip and Send Off, an event for graduating seniors on April 24.
Director of Safety, Health and Wellness Emily Roberts spoke on ASUI’s plan to increase lighting on sidewalks throughout campus as an addition to the University of Idaho’s Strategic Five-Year Plan for 2025-2030.
Roberts also expressed her gratitude for outgoing President Martha Smith and Vice President Emma Johnston, saying, “I would like to say a big thank you to Martha and Emma. Your leadership, compassion, resilience and integrity have pushed me to become a better person and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with two of the most inspirational and hardworking individuals. We will miss you so much.”
Incoming President Seyi Arogundade additionally spoke during the forum. “I also wanted to thank all of you, the Cabinet and Senate, and to thank Martha for everything we’ve been able to accomplish this year.”
Smith reflected on her time as president during the meeting, saying, “I’ve known ASUI for eight semesters in a row, and I’ve been to over 100 of these meetings. I can say without a doubt it’s been one of the most transformative experiences of the last four years of my life.”
The meeting ended with a swearing-in ceremony of the incoming president, vice president and senators.
