The Idaho swimming and diving team showed improvements in its previous home meet. Idaho beat rival Washington State University 123-108 at Saturday’s home meet.
Seniors led the team in four of eight victories against the Cougars. Coach Tom Jager said he was proud to see his seniors swim so well.

“I always expect a lot out of my seniors,” Jager said, “and when they step up and do well, the team responds. They finally get the taste of victory.”

Senior Amanda Morrow won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, and set a school record in the 1-meter dive with 272.90 points.

Senior Cortnee Hanson swam a strong 500-yard freestyle and took second in the 1,000-freestyle to add to the team’s strength.

Although a powerful senior core led the team, contributions by all the swimmers added up to the victory. The 400-yard relay played a major role in setting the tone for the entire meet.

The 400-relay team, including Staci Stratton, Samantha Hammerly, Treasa Ring, and Alyson O’Brien, beat the Cougars by four-tenths of a second.

Freshman Kaela Pettitt won the 1,000-freestyle with a time of 10:27.59, only two seconds off the school record. Freshman Kelsie Saxe also made an impact in the 200-meter individual medley with a second place finish.

“It was a great end to the dual meet season and it was a fun victory,” Jager said. “But we aren’t done. They’re still going to go in and want more.”

Jager is talking about Idaho’s next competition, the WAC Championship, in San Antonio. He said he was really pleased with a great weekend but the team needs to calm down and get focused on the WAC.

Jager said he knew this was a good team but he wanted his athletes to prove it to themselves. The players are proud of the big victory but as they focus on the next competition, they know the season is not over.
