Angst with a side of eyeliner Print E-mail

Tokio Hotel won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist on July 9. Why, among all the truly innovative new artists existing on the Earth’s surface, would a teen-pop quartet from Germany take the cake?
It’s because the girls love them.

Bill Kaulitz, the band’s lead singer, has been described as the anime version of Project Runway’s Christian Siriano. Kaulitz carries his 18-year-old eyeliner-ed self with a boy band swagger akin to glam, goth and emo — however that adds up.
His distinguishing feature is his electro shock hair that stands about a foot tall, if not higher. Every member of the band has their own niche to fill and girlies to be idolized by.

Tom Kaulitz, Bill’s younger twin brother and guitarist, dons blonde dreadlocks, a lip piercing and flat bill caps. The remaining two bandmates (who don’t appear to have the same priority as the twins in the public eye) are Gustav Schaefer on the drums and Georg Listing (bassist). Gustav and Georg take on the roles of Volcom Stone skater and long-haired-boy-next-door, respectively.
“Scream,” Tokio Hotel’s 2007 release, perfectly exemplifies what it feels like to be 14 years old through adolescent lyrics and sound that can best describe the makers as “bad boys with a soft side.”

The title track from the album is an anti-authority anthem instructing the oppressed listener to “scream it out loud.”  Tokio Hotel dredges up memories of early Good Charlotte in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Besides the obvious twin superstar connection, both bands’ messages are strikingly similar in how outrageously easy it is to follow — no tricky musical business here — and mostly emotional, sticking in the hearts of young, impressionable female listeners.

Tokio Hotel can expect success. No matter how unsavory their musical contributions may be, a technically or comparatively, they are trendy enough to snatch the spotlight for fifteen minutes with a palatable — at best — generic sound. Emotion (or hormones) fuels the incoherent translated-from-German lyrics and dramatic instrumentals.

Nothing can take away from the fact that somewhere someone is listening to Tokio Hotel and feeling better about their own life. At the end of the day, a smiling fan of Tom and Bill Kaulitz is happy. If the fans are happy, there’s nothing left to say.

Get your Facts Straight!!
Thanks for acknowledging Tokio Hotel's love for their fans, but other than that, your facts are waaayyyy off.

First, the VMAs took place in September. Sept 7 to be exact.
Second, Tom is the elder brother of Bill.
Third, They are 19 years old at their VMA win.
Also Scream, was released in the US in May 2008, but was released in June of 2007 in Europe.
And to let you know the song Scream was written when the twins were around 14, before Bill's voice even changed. And Live Every Second, was one of Bill's first songs, written well before TOkio Hotle they had come together as a band called Devilish.

Tokio Hotel & MTV award
Did you consider who they were running against...Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks, Taylor Swift and so on. Now that truly is a fine example of innovative new artist.
Actually, pop sounds like Miley Cyrus and Jordin Sparks but not Tokio Hotel so you need to take another listen!
Did you know that a lot of older (older than you) people like Tokio Hotel...I am one of them...The TH song Monsoon is similar to Scar Tissue (RHCP)for me. I am a huge fan of both bands and have seen both bands live many times.
I think it's disrespectful to many Tokio Hotel fans to bring their popularity down to hormones, teenage angst, gender and age. I consider myself mature at 50 and I am not a "girlie".
Why do you mention "teen-pop quartet from GERMANY"? Do you have issues with people from other countries or with people from GERMANY? You mention their homeland twice... What does their nationality have to do with their music?
Finally, I just wonder how many languages you speak and write? I speak only 3...As far as I can tell with my limited english, their lyrics are quite coherent..Certainly as coherent as the following "Emotion (or hormones) fuels the incoherent translated-from-German lyrics and dramatic instrumentals" or the following "his 18-year-old eyeliner-ed self". Wow...
BTW, there are many factual errors in your article. Unimportant details such as the age of band members, dates and such...

The future of journalism
I'm sure there were other more important stories you would have rather written about, but instead you got stuck with this one. That doesn't mean that you should do a half-assed job just because the story wasn't important to you. Learn how to fact check, or you will never get a shot at those important stories you'd rather be writing about.

honestly?
Megan, Try fact checking before you place pen to paper or keystroke to screen in this case. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and there is a major difference between Tokio Hotel and the stuff alot of people call music. Yes, to each his own but if you actually sat and listened to the lyrics, they are not the shoot them, screw them, all women are ho's, or kill the police. Each song lyric has a meaning which as a parent I find refreshing and as a fan, I appreciate. If a serious writer is lurking, why not research how the music in the last 30-40 years has influenced my generation and those that followed. You will see the respect for each other fly right out the window. Just because Tokio Hotel is from Germany, does that make a difference as to how their music sounds or how they look? All the hair bands of the 80's and 90's werent considered hormonal due to the makeup. Care to call Kiss hormonal and generic? I think not. As another put so well, how does one expect to get more "meatier" stories if a so called "puff" story cant be written with correct information?

Get your facts straight!
At first, I was excited to see that there was an article about my favorite band in The Argonaut. I mean... what a miracle! But then the first sentence threw me off completely. "...won the MTV Video Music Award... July 9." Those awards were on September 7th because I specifically remember screaming so loud with my room mate that our entire hall heard us. Another fact is that you said that Bill was 18 years old and that he's the older twin, but let me assure you that that he's not either of those things. Tom Kaulitz is older than he is by ten minutes and Tom doesn't let anybody forget it; he mentions it whenever he can. And the twins actually turned 19 years old on September 1st. Also... Tokio Hotel was taken under contract by Universal in Europe ONLY. In America, they've been taken under contract by Interscope and Cherrytree records. And why must you think that everyone who listens to them is some hysterical teenage girl? My friend and I are nearing 19 years and my own MOTHER loves them. I catch her singing the chorus of Durch den Monsun (German version of Monsoon) all the time whenever I'm at home. And I will also say that the album "Scream" was released in 2008 in America. It was released in 2007 in Europe and I'm gonna agree that it deserves that 2 1/2 stars because well... every true Tokio Hotel fan knows that all of their songs are much better in German, but they will still say that every song is their best song.

Are you kidding me?
Facts - be they correct or not - are irrelevant to be a journalist/reporter nowadays.
The subject of this "article" - the band - is also irrelevant.
Can we please focus on something else a little more relevant like...um... I don't know... the current Recession?
And even if this band has mass appeal, across different age brackets, it does not make it a brilliant band.
After all so do mash potatoes for example - everybody likes mash potatoes but it doesn't make it the pinnacle of culinary art.
