A weekend thick with beer, golf and football raises the question: does gender bias continue to affect Idaho life?
“Dad’s Weekend has a lot of moms,” Student Alumni Relations Board
adviser Tim Helmke said, “but Mom’s Weekend has very few dads.”
Whatever that means for society and for institutionalized roles, groups
across campus have again assembled a full weekend of events for the
Vandal father.

A weekend thick with beer, golf and football raises the question: does gender bias continue to affect Idaho life?
“Dad’s Weekend has a lot of moms,” Student Alumni Relations Board adviser Tim Helmke said, “but Mom’s Weekend has very few dads.”
Whatever that means for society and for institutionalized roles, groups across campus have again assembled a full weekend of events for the Vandal father.
Dad’s Weekend begins at 4 p.m. today with check-in at the University of Idaho Bookstore on Deakin Street and with the inaugural Dad Expo across the street at the Student Union Building.
The events planned for tonight and Saturday fuse traditional standards alongside new events geared toward ‘dad fare.’
The 6 p.m. beer tasting at the Coeur d’Alene Brewing Company Alehouse was the first event to sell out, said SArb advisor Katie Dahlinger.
The venue was chosen because it is all-ages and features the beers from a nearby microbrewery. SArb sold 150 tickets for admittance.
“We’re going to have five beers, including a vanilla bourbon stout float with ice cream,” said Wendy Smiley-Johnson, general manager of the Alehouse. The others include the huckleberry ale Scottish ale and the apropos Vandal Gold ale.
Kappa Alpha Theta will sponsor a poker tournament at 8 p.m. tonight in the SUB Ballroom.

The film “Iron Man,” as chosen by Vandal Entertainment, will play at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the SUB Borah Theater.
Athletics and the UI golf course also participated in the planning and will host the annual tradition of a nine-hole golf tournament Saturday morning. Prizes to be awarded include gift certificates and Vandal clothing. Breakfast will be served at 6:30 a.m., and the tournament will be held rain or shine.
Also Saturday morning, Vandalville — the fairgrounds erected on the north side of the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center for game days — will host a barbecue co-sponsored by Ag Days.
Barbecued beef sandwiches, salad, dessert and drinks will be served at 11 a.m. The food will cost $8.50 for adults and $5 for students.
According to Ron Richard at Vandal Meats, all the beef served originates from Latah and Nez Perce County.
SArb will have a presence at Vandalville as well. Vandal dads are invited to the group’s booth to get a free beverage koozie.
The University Inn Best Western will host a postgame celebration, following the 2 p.m. football game against the Nevada Wolfpack.
