Men
After a tough loss to Texas Christian University last weekend, the men’s tennis team was anxious to get some wins as they traveled to New Mexico. while there, they met tough competition in Western Athletic Conference rivals Utah State and New Mexico State.
The men played four matches in three days starting Friday, where they fell to New Mexico State in a close 4-3 defeat.
With the match tied at 3-3 against New Mexico State, Idaho had the victory in their sights with freshman Andrey Potapkin only needing two more points to clinch the WAC win. But Potapkin became injured and had to retire from the match, giving New Mexico State the final point needed to win.
“We played well today but unfortunately freak things happened that were out of our control,” said Idaho coach Jeff Beaman.
With Potapkin out at the No. 1 spot, the team had to step it up as they took on Utah State, another WAC opponent, on Saturday.
They fought hard and got their second conference win against Utah State with a 4-3 victory, increasing their WAC record to 2-1.
After the victory over Utah, the men set their sights on Western New Mexico University and Northern Arizona University where they won 7-0 and 5-2.
The men increased their overall record to 8-4.
Women
After a two week break due to cancellations from severe weather, the women’s tennis team was ready to get back in competition as they traveled to New Mexico to take on five teams in just four days.
The women got off to a slow start Thursday and Friday as they got swept by both the University of New Mexico and the University of Texas at El Paso 7-0.
“We played some close matches today but it was a tough loss,” Beaman said. “This is a young team that will need to learn from their losses.”
That’s exactly what they did as they got their first WAC win on Saturday against Utah State with a 5-2 victory.
The team showed improvement in doubles play winning all three doubles matches.
They showed even more improvement that afternoon when they swept Western New Mexico University 7-0.
The women couldn’t keep it going though as they competed in their fifth and final match of the weekend against WAC rival, New Mexico State University. New Mexico State cleaned house with a 7-0 victory over Idaho.
