Bruce Mann/Argonaut Janice Husmann, mother of wounded UI senior Pete Husmann, speaks to reporters outside of the Moscow City Council Chambers on Monday.
Janice Husmann was awakened early Sunday morning in Arizona by a phone call no mother wants to receive. Her son Pete Husmann, a senior studying mechanical engineering at the University of Idaho, was in the hospital after being shot three times by a gunman in Moscow.
According to police, Jason Hamilton, 36, shot and killed three people and wounded three others, including Husmann during a shootout around the Latah County Courthouse.
Janice Husmann, who lives in Coeur d’Alene, was in Arizona when she received the news about her son and got out on the first flight she could.
“If I had been home, it would have taken me a hour to get here. Maybe less,” Husmann said in Moscow on Monday.
Late Saturday night, Pete Husmann, 20, heard gunshots outside his apartment, armed himself with a .45 caliber handgun and headed outside to see if he could help, police have said.
“I am very proud of him,” his mother said. “He wanted to get involved and help. That is the type of person he is.”
Husmann did not have time to draw his weapon before being wounded by Hamilton, police said. The first bullet struck Husmann in the back, passing through his liver and a rib. While on the ground, he was hit twice more. The second bullet entered in the front of his neck and exited through his shoulder while a third bullet struck him in the thigh, she said.
Though wounded, Husmann was able to get up and run away while still being shot at by Hamilton from the First Presbyterian Church. A group of people gathered around him, helping with his wounds before a paramedic crew was able to get him to safety and the hospital, his mother said.
Monday morning, Husmann was in serious but stable condition and was heading into another surgery to repair his shoulder.
His mother said he was conscious and talking when she arrived at the hospital.
“He said, ‘Thank you for coming,’” Janice Husmann said. “But I can tell he is very uncomfortable and still in a lot of pain.”
Husmann, an avid hunter, was still able to bring some levity to his situation telling his mother, “So this is what a deer feels like.”
Husmann is expected to remain in the hospital for 10-15 days and plans on returning to classes at UI in the fall, Janice Husmann said.
