Women’s Center put it all on the table at the International Women’s Day Fair. The fair provided useful information about women’s issues like body image, safety and global equity.
Student groups, such as the women’s Greek Life Panhellenic Council, Women’s Outdoor Programs and the UI Law School’s ACLU set up booths throughout the Clearwater room in the SUB to help aware other students and faculty about women’s studies.
Director of the center, Jeannie Harvey, said International Women’s Day is similar to Mother’s Day. It is a day to celebrate the women of the world and raise awareness about women’s issues.
Students can get involved in many ways with the Women’s Center. Harvey encouraged students to attend events, learn about women’s studies and take advantage of volunteer opportunities.
“Students can always sign up for our mailing list to get weekly news about the center,” she said.
The Women’s Center is not only for women. Men are always finding ways to get involved and are welcome. The main focus for the Women’s Center is to find ways for how men and women can help work on inequities of the world.
Around the world, one in five women are likely to be a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime, according to the World Health Organization.
A petition to get the United States to sign a Treaty of the Rights of Women, also known as CEDAW, was available at the fair. It addressed the legal rights, education, health care and violence against women.
“It was a good turnout, but it would have been nice to see more men come through,” said Whitney Chapman, a volunteer for the International Women’s Day Fair.
Other events that are coming up for the Women’s Center are the annual Virginia Wolf 2007 Distinguished Service Awards, the UI Step and Stroll Competition and the Spoken Word: Andrea Gibson.
