Robb Akey, former WSU defensive coordinator, named UI football coachFormer Washington State defensive coordinator Robb Akey was introduced as the University of Idaho football coach Wednesday.Akey is Idaho’s fourth coach since 2003. “We have a great football coach here,” said Rob Spear, UI athletic director. “I wanted somebody who could recruit our current kids. Those kids have been through a tough situation, but they’re resilient, they’re going to respond, and this guy here is going to bring them to greatness.” Akey, 40, began his coaching career in 1988 at his alma mater Weber State as the assistant defensive line coach. He later became the defensive coordinator at Northern Arizona University before becoming the defensive line coach at WSU in 1998, and defensive coordinator in 2003. Akey replaces Dennis Erickson, who left the University of Idaho for Arizona State University Dec. 9 after only 10 months at Idaho. Akey was one of a pool of candidates that included John L. Smith, a former Idaho and Michigan State coach, and Mike Kramer, the current Montana State coach and a former Idaho player, among others. Both Smith and Kramer withdrew their names from consideration last week. “This has been 19 years of busting my tail to have the opportunity to take over my own program,” Akey said. “You couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than the one that is set forth before us today.” For a full story on Akey, watch the Argonaut Web site this week.
