As the article states, the water depth can and does change fast. From your first dive, by the time you are up to the top for the second, the water can drop drastically.

For 8 years I worked at Pullman Hospital so I was a little more aware of accidents occurring on the river, since they came to us first. I say first because the injuries were usually severe enough to need a helicopter transport to Spokane. One summer, in a three week period, there was two broken necks, and a person who broke both legs.

Another very dangerous area was the Stop sign at the top of the grade. A hot day in the sun, combined with your favorite chilled alcoholic drink made for a sometimes lethal combination.

Have fun on the River, respect it, and have a safe drive home.

Kerrick also mentioned twice to his atty to think about estrada and his rights. There is a reason he is standing on his word and it is because it is good. He took a polygraph after being convicted and he passed it…high on credibility.

I see how with just reading the paper people can see one side, but when you see the rest of the story and what was not taken into consideration at the trial. Well changes your mind. Juries have been wrong before. in my opinion

Well he passed a polygraph test I am not surprised but I have believed him since the beginning. I guess it is even harder to pass a polygraph after someone has been convicted. Even rarer for someone to take one before sentencing…

And I also read text between Jesse and one of the two girls who allegedly claimed rape. I am going to get a copy of the text and post them so everyone can see it wasn’t rape. Appears to me that they kind of liked each other. She seems like a really nice girl in her text. Must have gotten caught up in the mud slinging. Wonder if she has the balls to do the right thing?

I was greatly dismayed Friday to read the article “Religion of peace?” by Brian Marceau. Until Friday, I generally found some value in the opinions of Mr. Marceau – even if his treatment of mass media coverage disintegrated into meaningless and disgusting scatological metaphors. However, on Friday – the holy day for Muslims – Mr. Marceau took it upon himself to publicly display his narrow mindedness by framing Islam as a religion of violence, even going so far as to characterize Middle Easterners as “barbarians.”

Not only is Mr. Marceau’s language overwhelmingly littered with generalizations, but he also relies on a faulty argument that insists religion is responsible for the actions of individuals. Such an argument would be akin to me stating America’s gun culture and availability of firearms are responsible for the actions of individuals at Newtown, Aurora, and Columbine – an argument I’m sure would result in a deluge of letters calling me a liberal idiot. Maybe I am a liberal idiot, but I’m an idiot who arrived at my ideology following two combat tours of Iraq. Fortunately all the members of my unit returned safely. Unfortunately, a close comrade of mine was killed by an assailant wielding an AK-47 assault rifle. The assailant had a well-documented history of mental illness. He had legally acquired the rifle from his father – a former police chief. However, I don’t blame gun culture; I blame the individuals who murdered my friend.

Of course, a thesis more akin to the one which Mr. Marceau argues would be to blame Orthodox Christianity for the forced displacement of over 800,000 ethnic Albanians and the murder of nearly 10,000 more during the Kosovo War. Or to demonize Catholicism for the bombings orchestrated by the IRA, or Protestant Christianity for the conduct of the KKK against African Americans, or Evangelical Christians for attempting to bar the rights of gay Americans.

Mr. Marceau cites a number of “statistics” based on opinion polling, but as he states the “study” neglects to cite data concerning “Muslim-on-Muslim” violence. However, the countries Mr. Marceau references (Egypt, Syria, Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan) all have lower murder rates than the United States. Of course, Mr. Marceau’s generalized thinking is nothing new. An overwhelming percentage of Americans supported the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq – two of the longest and most costly wars in our nation’s history. However, not a single 9/11 hijacker was Afghani or Iraqi.

Our anger and our fear were enough to entrench us in two ill-conceived operations that targeted just two men, but violated the sovereignty of millions. We got Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein – but at what human cost? Over 100,000 Iraqi civilians were killed and more than 2 million Afghanis were forced to flee their homeland. By this account, all Americans must be practitioners of a violent ideology. But we all know that’s not true.

Resisting violence is about personal responsibility and respect for human life (qualities that all major religions preach) and I like to hope that sound journalism upholds these same values when considering what is newsworthy. Mr. Marceau’s brash worldview can be dismissed as the naïve pandering of a young and hungry journalist, but I cannot excuse him from taking some responsibility for the damaging effect his rhetoric may have on his fellow Vandals.

More than a hundred students attending this University are from countries which Mr. Marceau would characterize as “barbaric,” as well as many faculty members. They pay tuition and dutifully attend classes. They have sacrificed a lot for to be afforded the opportunity to study and instruct at this fine institution. Frankly, they deserve to be treated as individuals, just as we all wish to be treated, and not merely as a collection of marginalized, handpicked statistics. At the very least, our international Vandals deserve an apology from Mr. Marceau and The Argonaut staff for allowing the publication of such ignorant rhetoric. This kind of press only incites hatred and destroys the possibility for building understanding amongst diverse cultures.

I absolutely agree with your thesis: legislating immorality leads to more immorality. I think restricting consenting adults’ choices, which harm no others, is immoral. Absolutely, immorally restricting some marriages leads to further immoral restrictions. Terrific news, though: we’re progressing, not regressing.

I agree with your premise that only allowing “two consenting adults” to marry is arbitrary and, in fairness, should be “consenting adults,” which would allow polygamy. How would that harm me? How would that harm someone else’s marriage? And fundamentalist Mormons certainly don’t think it’s immoral, why do you?

We allowed divorce, interreligious marriage, and interracial marriage. Soon, we will allow gay marriage everywhere. In an enlightened future, we will allow polygamous marriage. By your morality, we would go backwards until the only marriages allowed were between a rapist and his paid-for victim or a conqueror and his spoils of pillage, per “REAL” biblical rules. I find that immoral.

“Darius McClinton-Hunter, the 17-year-old son of Detroit Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter, filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Collin County against those who accused him of sexual assault last year.
According to Larry Friedman, the lawyer representing Hunter, “the suit seeks to recover damages against the girls and the parents of the girls who made the false accusations of sexual assault against Darius that falsely branded as a ‘criminal,’ ruined his reputation, sent him to an Alternative School for a year, got him kicked off the Prosper High School Football Team and banned from High School Sports.”

McClinton-Hunter is seeking monetary relief over $10 million to recover “all actual, consequential, and incidental damages caused by the defamation/slander,” and another $30 million in punitive damages, according to the suit.” …….

“A famous singer and song writer once said in his song titled ‘Billie Jean’ – And mother always told me, ‘Be careful who you love And be careful what you do, cause the lie becomes the truth,’” the suit said.

The preliminary statement goes on to say “sexual assault is a horrible crime, but false accusations of sexual assault are every bit as horrible.”

That is not what I am saying. Perhaps I misled by the ‘stops to consider a condom’ which is when he said ‘it’s okay I have a condom’so that is what i was referring to. When does a guy say “its okay I got a condom” – usually that conversation come up when there is consensual sex. I don’t think a rapist would mention it. Could be wrong. I did not mean that just because a condom was involved it means there wasn’t rape. I know they are used to conceal DNA. I just don’t believe a rapist would discuss using one.

There is a reason why there is no evidence, it wasn’t rape More evidence to show it was consensual but never hear that part. Two girls – roommates – who had no complaints til after they found out they both were with the same guy. It happens – isn’t the first time young women got angry and called it rape. There was another case not so long ago that never got past the police station when they finally admitted they were mad at the guy they both slept with the same night but didn’t know about the other one.
It is just going to make it harder for girls who really have been raped when people cry ‘rape’ because they are mad.

Well there was ‘enthusiastic consent’ in Jesse Vierstra’s case but then the girls changed it up when it was over…after each other found out that there roommate had also dipped in the same pond per se… And there is my point. Young adults need to be careful with whom they are playing with. Date for a while. One night stands may turn into something you did not anticipate. Look, I don’t know how to stop some girls from crying rape when it is not rape…What scares me is the ones that do that who weren’t raped are going to make it difficult for those who were. As these girls did. If you look into the evidence you will find out why I am saying so. He was charged but no evidence–there is a reason why and those reasons are never mentioned in the news.

I am allowed my opinion as anyone else. I feel when a man stops what he is doing and says ‘its okay I have a condom’ then it changes the appearance of force. When a female unzips his pants and participates in the foreplay, it does not appear to me that it should be called rape. When a female helps to get her own pants down…doesn’t appear like rape to me. If you are supposedly thrown down and have your very very tight pants ripped down to just your knees and you are resisting then I can see rape —but still wonder how penetration can occur when your so very tight pants that one cannot get them off unless she pulls them down from the ankles to get them off — are to your knees (don’t have to be a professional -try it yourself)…or why when pants are so physically taken down why is there no scrapes bruises marks of any kind…and even then still he stops to consider a condom. Sorry, I may not be a professional, but what is obvious is just obvious. I would enjoy getting a professional’s opinion and for that matter if is had been done, perhaps an innocent young man would not be in jail.

What an excellent idea! There has been a strong need for this for quite some time. I am so happy to see that these rooms are now available for nursing moms. As a mom who is working full time and exclusively breastfeeding a 7 month old, I understand the importance of having a private, quiet and clean place to express milk. It’s the people like these wonderful ladies who will make breastfeeding much more manageable for busy moms who want to breastfeed their babies. Great job ladies for helping to keep Idaho among the 3 top states in the nation for breastfeeding!!!

The purpose of these rooms isn’t primarily for nursing babies, its for pumping/expressing breast milk. A simple Google search about pumping will tell you all the statistics and facts you need to know in order to realize that these rooms are not only necessary for the health of the breast-feeding mother, but federally required by law.

“staggering 41 percent of transgender or gender non-conforming individuals reported attempting suicide” —- suicide rate wasn’t nearly that high in African American populations when they faced severe discrimination, so perhaps it isn’t discrimination contributing to the dramatic increase in suicide rates, but rather going against what they now is natural, normal, and healthy.

“growing body of scientific research” —- care to cite some articles? any with hard science, or are they all just relying on the liberal progression of social scientists?

Apparently you don’t know this young man,or the facts,got all your info from newspaper so it’s got to be “right”. Well for one the 2 girls that accused hom of “rape” had a whole lot of explaining to do after it was revealed that they went to his dorm and got into his bed with him,in fact one of the girls “rode the pony”, she was on top, and only after the 2 girls hooked up and shared their intimate stories like girls do, did they find out that their new “boy toy” was one in the same so they screamed rape,got him kicked out of school (U of I student council,which has alot more lattitude than state law found him innocent)just who was the victim here.

You are right I have little understanding of how rapist behave. I did not know they performed oral sex on the female (evidence proved). Both said he stopped to say it is okay i have a condom. I didn’t know rapist stopped in order to use one..I always figure they didn’t give a damn and went for what they were there for. So no I do not know how rapist behave. I don’t know any rapist.
I know recently a young man was accused of rape when he had sex with two young women the same night. They were mad and went to the police. It was unfounded as they were willing until they found out about the other one and wanted to get back at him. No evidence. This is what scares me about the whole rape law…getting back at a young man and using the rape law for it.
I will also continue to pray for both the families. This has and continues to tear them up. I would not want my children to have to go through this or be the parents, the jury, anyone involved, the people on the outside who just see what is in the paper and not the rest of the story who continue to cause more pain. Myself included. The pain already caused will always be there and it breaks my heart for everyone.

Does anyone even think about when young men and women go to college and are out from under their parents thumb, they go crazy….drinking, hooking up and doing all kinds of things they will later be ashamed of? Moral conduct is a thing of the past…and U of I is known to be a party town. Parents, don’t think your child will be the innocent one anymore after they leave your home. They don’t go to college just to get an education.

In my opinion when two girls who happen to be roommates find that they both slept with the same guy within 5 days of each other…well if I were either one of them I would not be happy with the news either. Wonder why the first one didn’t say anything til after she found out about the 2nd one? Also, in my opinion, girls who say this happen to them and continue to want to have a relationship with alleged offender well that makes me wonder also.
The point is that with this law booth sexes are going to have to be careful. No one knows what really goes on behind closed doors. It would be wise to be careful.

The rape laws should be changed and it should note that the conduct of the females should be taken into consideration. Guys should be careful from here on out and do not go anywhere alone with a girl without having them say it is okay to someone else first. Girls better be careful of their conduct. If you act like everything is a go…it is not okay to call it rape later. Years ago, girls scared guys with saying ‘I’m pregnant’ and the truth would eventually be known…nowadays girls say rape and the truth is not known…but the damage to each family is and the participants are scarred for life.

Obviously, you don’t have children. Sometimes the circumstances are such that a parent will not want to put a baby in daycare and then there are those that cannot. Either way, it depends on the circumstances and what a baby needs is their mother if they can. Some of the attendance requirements make it difficult to go to school and take care of the baby. I have taken my baby to classes, sometimes when childcare was unavailable, and more recently so I get to see my baby as I go to school full time and work full time. I don’t want Daycare raising my baby. The people in my class actually asked me to bring him to class. Maybe you should try to look at this from the perspective of someone who has children. We are doing the best we can. I think these rooms are a great idea I think they should put them in Boise and Idaho Falls as well where you will find a variety of students that may need them.

The victim in this case is not always the defendant, but the prosecuted. When a girl flirts with him all night,via text, meets up with him, makes out with him, climbs all over him, allows him to carry her off to the bushes, helps him pull down her pants and do oral sex,etc, then calls rape when she regrets her actions. No fighting off, no calling out for help, no bruising, just plain ashamed of herself. Doesn’t seem like she’s the victim here.

As a collector of firearms I have to disagree with the premises of this article that the current run on the gun stores is motivated by conspiracy theories or that the ammunition shortage is caused by DHS buying up all the ammunition. If every DHS employee were to fire about 175 rounds a week in training or whatever they would burn through that amount of ammunition in a single year. 1.6 billion rounds is a lot of ammunition and probably more than the DHS needs but its not beyond the capability of the US ammunition industry to fill such a large single order and still meet normal demand from US citizens. It IS beyond their capability to provide for the current unusually high demand from US citizens regardless of any large single orders of ammunition. The average citizen ought to have a healthy suspicion of the motives of any government agency but the idea that the DHS would conduct a WAR against the US populace is pretty far out there and I don’t think that most people are worried about it. The real motivating factor behind the current high demand for firearms and ammunition is almost certainly concern that congress will enact very tight gun laws as a short-sighted knee-jerk response to recent tragedies. Try harder.

Another thing that would help would be for residents of the state of Idaho to write their representatives and senators and get something happening! Let them know your thoughts and make them understand that antiquated laws like these only hurt the victims of these terrible crimes. There is no reason to wait to take action to correct this. Yes, if everyone lost 10 pounds, the obesity rate would drop. However, that doesn’t really change anything. The point is that there are people who are very obese, some that are overweight, and some that don’t need to lose weight at all.

If everyone lost 10 pounds, it only decreases the obesity rate because because of how averaging works. It certainly doesn’t mean that anyone is that much healthier: some people could stand to lose even more than just 10 pounds, and some people would be underweight if they lost 10 pounds.

Everyone losing 10 pounds doesn’t solve the obesity problem, and not everyone is obese. Nutrition is something that each individual must assess personally.

I am a smoker and I do think there should be designated smoking area. I don’t like smoking around nonsmokers because not everybody likes the smell of it or don’t want to inhale it. Why make them suffer through second-hand smoke for the smokers actions of choosing to smoke? I also think there should be more extinguishers
to reduce the littering of cigarette butts. But there definitely needs to be a designated smoking area so the non-smokers don’t have to worry about running into smokers.

We might also note, that no one started talking about God until Stevesie did. God’s just not a relevant issue anymore. Personally, I tend by this slogan “Destroy the gospel by ignoring it.”

What is relevant and necessary for this discussion is a non-religious ethics. We’re dealing with a broad group of people who all deserve representation on their terms. As such, we cannot reduce their positions to religious discourse.

And sorry, John, if it feels like I hi-jacked your comment.

Ethically speaking, I don’t see any justification for supporting a system that is predicated upon inequality. The imposition of inequality is the imposition of non-Freedom.

There will always be suffering, but better we suffer together at the hands of a system that is brutally fair than one that is easily manipulated. “Freedom” is always an excuse to hide subjective selfishness.

No one has helped the poor more than Christ and His Church. Show me any institutions of mercy and healing atheists have come up with. We’re all in favor of helping the poor. But willingly and individually, not forced by government mandate. Take the government out of it. Let people give by their own free volition. Charity isn’t charity if it is forced. History is replete with examples of despots who have promised to take care of the needs of the people by governmental decree, and when in power the people are murdered and enslaved (i.e. Mao, Stalin, Hitler).

- Neither Crony Capitalism or Communism -

If the government takes more and more from the rich and gives more and more to the poor… is that the answer? Forced redistribution in the name of “equality” and “justice” (communism) has never worked in the history of the world. But, of course, crony capitalism (i.e. corporations in bed with the government) results in legalized thievery as well. So what’s the answer? NEITHER crony capitalism (i.e. government favoring corporations) nor communism (i.e. government favoring the poor)! Do you notice the common denominator in both scenarios is = THE GOVERNMENT! How about taking the government out of both as much as possible…as our founding fathers envisioned? How about returning to the primary purpose of the government which is to “bear the sword” (Romans 13:4). Simply put, it should protect us from 1) invaders from without and 2) corruption from within. But, instead, it seems obsessed with just the opposite: invading others without and corrupting corporations as well as the poor within. How about “we the people” telling our government to back off! How about “we the people” telling our government to bring our troops home and quit favoring anybody, rich or poor? How about a flat tax for everyone – equally. How about the government leveling the playing field so everyone has EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to labor and succeed as a result of their hard work, instead of equal pay for those who refuse to work? Inequalities between people will always exist. Jesus said, “The poor will always be with you.” (Mark 14:7). Some people will be leaders, some followers. Some will be doctors, lawyers, research scientists, nobel laureates. Some will be ditch workers, waiters, shoe shiners, custodians. Are all these vocations important? Yes! Do they all serve God? Yes! Should they all be paid the same? No! It is NOT the job of the government to equalize people or their pay. It’s the job of the government to EQUALIZE OPPORTUNITY so we can all earn our wage fairly. God does not want people lazily living and eating off the sweat of others. Of course, if they are disabled – yes, but if fully abled – no! God, in love, commands: “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.” (2Thessalonians 3:10) Let us do all we can to keep the Federal Government out of the “charity business” for the poor…as well as…out of the “bail-out business” for the rich? Let’s bring these concerns down to the local; state, community, and private levels. With 17 Trillion in debt and rising, the Federal Government has obviously proven itself to be totally inept at “charity” and “business”. The 40th President of of the United States was right, “Government is not the solution to our problem, government IS the problem!”

THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN. Count Leech is promoting a whole new world order which has been tried many times through the world’s history…each time ending in utter failure.

Dr. C.F.W.Walther, a Lutheran Theologian of the 18th century, said in reaction to the philosophy of Karl Marx, “These days many hold that complete equality, particularly in temporal wealth, is the only means by which all men can be equally happy. If people would be neither rich nor poor, then the golden age predicated by the poets of almost all nations would come, the world would become a paradise, the countless sobs of the miserable would be stilled, and all humanity would become one great and blessed family. Others go even farther. They maintain: The fact that there are rich and poor . . . point to universal injustice. They say all enter this world with absolutely the same rights; all have equal claim to its soil, to its products, to all its wealth. To be a rich man and a thief many consider the same thing; they deem the government which protects the rich in his possessions the appointed public protectress of crying injustice.”

These words were written by Walther in a sermon on Luke 16:1-9, for the Ninth Sunday after Trinity. He plainly shows that he understands the true nature of communism and socialism. Communism is not simply an attractive alternate economic theory, it is a monstrous, immoral, and ungodly evil. Dr. Walther continued in his sermon: “Solomon quite properly says: ‘The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all!’ Proverbs 22:2. Whoever calls the difference between rich and poor, between great and humble, between authorities and subjects, a state of injustice, insolently calls God the Lord himself, who has the power to do what he wishes with His own property, unjust, for God himself has ordered this difference among us fallen men!”

Christ’s Kingdom is above; Christianity never tried by Communists and Socialists; Consequence if it were tried; Christian’s aim is eternal Life.

Was the author “unloving?” I have no idea. But he did say,

“This is one of the best ways to reduce poverty or neediness. We must play on their discomfort. People do not become motivated when they are made comfortable.”

We must play on someone’s discomfort? Really? I’m assuming you work in some capacity – do you want to work for a boss with that kind of attitude? One who tries to force you to do something by applying discomfort? I sure don’t, and I have the resources to avoid it. In fact, that is one reason the US economy is changing – too many companies are moving overseas to locations where workers are still allowed to be motivated by discomfort. There are plenty of motivational studies that show this to be a false meme. It’s not a successful strategy in America, and it matters not whether or not it is “unloving.” It doesn’t work.

My point is that the article is from a viewpoint that is not going to be successful. That’s why the author’s personal experience matters. His strategy is a failing strategy, taken from an incorrect world view and he would have a better idea about that if he would have ever been in a situation of desperation himself.

The piece would have read better clothed in at least a thread of humility.

This makes a lot sense. Let’s stress out people who are already extremely stressed out because then they will work harder?

Why doesn’t the university play on your discomfort and force you to take 3 children, work 60 hours a week, and we’ll see if you can “get ahead”.

However, Andrew, I do agree with you that people shouldn’t rely on the state. Our government is predicated upon capitalism, which as you clearly don’t understand is a system predicated upon a class structure. This class structure is set up in such a way that poor people are necessary. After all, you can’t have the rich without the poor. Rich people are those who, benevolently, have the ambition, ideas, and means to employ the poor old poor people so that they can survive and so the rich man can sustain his wealth.

The problem with this system is at least twofold. First, the rich have the means to take the wealth from the “free market” and store it up. This means that there is no wealth for the lower or poor class to get ahold of. So even if they do work harder, there’s nothing for them to gain. Second, because there is no wealth to be had for the poor, they are not “free” to climb the class structure. Freedom is a vagary used to justify greed and ignorance.

Ultimately, though, Andrew, I think we agree, as summed up in your Hamilton quote, “Now instead of men giving to the state the state was to give to them.” Hamilton is right, the state should stop giving to men, and men should start giving to the state. No more tax breaks for the rich. In fact, let’s increase taxes for the rich since they have more to give to their country. I like this. It sounds like communism. The state will own everything and nothing will be yours or mine. But in order that the state get rich, they will need us to work and produce for them. We will all be poor together and the state will be healthy and strong, just like Hamilton and you want.

Really, everyone should rob rich people and corporations because that would be true Freedom. after all, the logical endpoint of radical Freedom is Anarchy. So here, Andrew, you are an Anarchist. Start arguing like one.

As someone who is on food stamps while working in the summer and off of them in the school year I find this highly offensive and reductive. Food assistance exists for a reason. Food security is an important priority in the United States and not in the capitalist “utopia” you seem to hearken to. Food assistance programs are run at the state level rather than federally and as such the rules vary from program to program. These rules make getting food stamps highly selective and often require participants to attend mandatory early morning classes to build job skills if he or she is unemployed. Other requirements include that if you are a university student that you be working a work study job or at least 20 hours of any other kind of employment. So amongst two students from identical economic backgrounds, one of whom works up to 19 hours of a job and the other working 1 hour of a work study job in a week: The one who works more will not receive food assistance. There are many inconsistencies such as these within the rules. Also there seems to be some kind of cultural misperception that people who use food assistance live in some kind of perpetual party when this is far from the truth. The very marginal boost of food assistance is not going to make the difference in whether you make it over the poverty line in 5, 10, 20 years or a lifetime. The assumption that all people eligible for food assistance and do not collect because they are too embarrassed to receive food assistance is pure fabrication. I work hard and many of my peers work hard, the upwardly mobile, the privileged, and the stagnant. But all these groups are still victim to the hidden and pitiless forces of a socio-economic system they did not build, did not choose to be born into and don’t agree with. Through Economic downturn, lack of opportunity, Natural disaster, Unexpected loss of income and countless other unfair and unforeseen realities of living, Food Assistance can offer stability, psychologically (especially for children) and economically that can even appeal to the strictest materialist. By this, I mean to say that people will eat and will eat by any means which can mean a lot worse problem than marginal tax increases, especially for those lovers of the status quo.
Lastly, food assistance should be well aligned with the Atlas-Shrugged-thumping Individualist crowd who chronically attack it. Why would a self interested party in a capitalist structure be opposed to an increase of their capital? While the good libertarian would argue that the food assistance money is stolen from taxpayers by a government apparatus, this very altruistic concern for justice towards the abstract “taxpayer” seems hardly in line with the aggressive, anti-environmental, anti-humanist, wealth-building of the individual.

But to say he has to reveal what he “knows personally about true need” in order to legitimize his comments and not come across “holier-than-thou”, that is not only unreasonable, it is requirement not even you abide by. For you speak your critical opinion in this public forum without revealing to us what you “know personally about true need”. Therefore we have no choice, according to your criterion, but to question your sincerity and tell you, you are coming across “holier-than-thou”.

Throw away the sanctimonious standard you self-righteously set up in order to shut people down. The real question is, “Does he speak truth or not?”

I have spent 30 minutes on the U of I’s website and the Argonaut’s website looking for biographies, or any information, about the candidates for this election, but I have found nothing. I didn’t even know about this election until I read someone’s post about it on Facebook. Maybe if the ASUI wants more people to participate in these elections they need to do a better job of advertising them: I feel really uneasy making an uninformed decision. Whats the point in voting when I know nothing about the candidates?

It’s so bizarre how little emphasis Idaho puts on athletics. It has absolutely hurt the University as a whole. As athletics are the “front porch” of the school, many view Idaho overall as a failure because the athletics have been terrible. I don’t like the dome for anything — athletics or music — but are they really going to take the roof off after putting $30 million into windows and renovations? Seems like a big waste of money.

Also, jI ust talked to someone from the UI who said athletics would be in the events center more like 80 percent of the time, not the 20-30 that Spear said.

Spear has said some “interesting” things over the years, various proposed facilities projects (one with a Mark Schlereth-narrarated video), dig downs, wall punch-outs, etc., and now the roof removal deal. He needs to be held accountable for his words.

In short, it’s from the mouth of a madman. (Only the mad claim things that aren’t based in material reality.) Then you say that he was “level-headed in his speech.” This makes me wonder if there’s any credibility in yours.

“[Sullivan] needs to stop proclaiming his doubtful Christian faith.” Yes, yes he does, like most Americans should. Romans, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Revelation, etc, all dogmatic, out-of-touch ideas of human nature, striving to find truth and meaning with ancient words. If you stand outside the whole thing and look on with an impartial eye, you’ll see new truths that transcend old ones, and you won’t be burdened with the current religious arguments, because they’re invalid. They’re based on faith, NOT fact. Furthermore, religion preaches hate, not love. Which isn’t what Jesus taught. Christianity is based on CHRIST’S teachings, which is why it’s called “CHRISTianity.” And what Jesus says during the Sermon on the Mount is love, only love.

The arena is a big need and should have been built years ago. It would benefit many programs on campus, not just athletics. Maybe the university will get some better events to come to campus.

The kibbie is absolutely horrendous for basketball. Too many teams share that facility and it is a problem. It isn’t worth putting money into Memorial Gym either.
