Athletes recognized for academic achievements
Two weeks after the Idaho women’s cross country team won the WAC Championship and the men’s team placed second, the teams are back in action. The Vandal cross country teams compete in the NCAA West Championship Meet Friday at Sacramento, Calif. The meet will feature several hundred of the best collegiate runners in the West.
It was originally a joke between four freshmen and their head coach.
Winning one championship shows a team is good but winning four-straight championships qualifies it as a dynasty.

When Cody Helbling stepped up to the starting line at Saturday’s WAC championship meet, he did so carrying a burden he didn’t have to account for during the five meets preceding the conference championships.
The wind was blowing and the rain was falling hard, but all the WAC runners were behind him when Idaho freshman Nicholas Boersma crossed the finish line. It was the first time a Vandal runner had won a conference championship since Vic Dyrgall won the Pacific Coast Conference title in 1941.

Cody Helbling didn’t originally plan on running at Idaho. In fact, after a couple years of running for BYU, he decided to give it up completely to focus on academics. Two years later, Helbling is Idaho’s top men’s cross country runner and one of the best in the WAC.
