Come fall, it can be easy to get into the routine of only wearing sweats on a daily basis and daunting to think about updating your wardrobe. But with a few keys pieces and some ingenuity, looking trendy through fall and into winter is easier than you think.

We all want our wardrobes to be up-to-date, but for most students, spending money on new clothes isn”t an option. It”s important not to send all of you summer clothes into hiding just yet. The most important thing to note when updating your wardrobe is that you can keep any piece of clothing in your fall mix if it can be layered to keep you warm. Before you decide to rummage through your closet and drawers, remember that the goal is to spend little and create more.

Autumn is the time of the year to get creative. If the vibrant colors of the falling leaves on campus don”t inspire you to change up your wardrobe, then I don”t know what will. For both men and women, the best way to achieve a fall look is to utilize layers.

For the college woman, the possibilities for fall looks are endless. Look at any Pinterest board this season and you will most likely find the ultimate lookbook for fall fashion. But, as most of us know, it takes a lot of time and money to create these looks. The idea behind layering your clothes is to achieve the look of time and money – plus, more layers mean more warmth.

Every woman needs at least three pieces of outerwear to keep them warm in the fall: a vest, a jacket and a peacoat. Vests are great for days when the sun shines and you need less coverage, jackets are a great casual addition to any outfit and peacoats can be the perfect option for a dressier look.

Sweaters are the foundation for any fashionable fall wardrobe. A few neutral colored sweaters can make all the difference when it comes to putting together an outfit. Cream, navy blue, burgundy and black are great seasonal colors and will most likely match all of your outerwear.

It is always sad to pack away a favorite dress or skirt from the summer, but if they can be paired with tights for a fall look, keep them in the closet. Coupled with a sweater or jacket on the top, lighter clothing can easily be made into a more autumnal look.

The way I like to add pops of color to my fall clothing collection is through accessories. Scarves and gloves are the best ways to add autumn colors to your outfit.

Don”t worry guys – you aren”t left out in fashion trends for the fall. In fact, autumn is the best time for you hone in on your fashion skills and bring out your inner GQ. You do not need many pieces to achieve a great fall look as long as you layer what you have.

Strong outerwear pieces are quintessential for every college man, and sweatshirts just don”t cut it when it comes to creating a cohesive outfit. Half-zip, pullover sweaters are a great option for those who like the feel of a hoodie or sweatshirt, but want something a bit trendier. Army jackets with an olive green color are also a popular piece of outerwear this time of the year, and look great over warm shirts.

Men have a wide array of shirt choices for fall, in varying colors. Light crewneck sweaters should be a staple in your closet for an easy, yet put together, look. Flannels are also a must-have – but stick to that reds and navy blues, or else they tend to look summery.

Slim and straight-legged pants are the best styles to wear for any time of the year, but they work well for fall because they fit nicely with boots. Jeans and pants alike can be dressed up or dressed down for any outfit.

Just because Uggs are not the trendiest shoes amongst men does not mean you have to give up comfort and warmth. Work-style boots are trending this season, which transition well into winter, and neutral colored Vans work with many outfits, so don”t throw those out just yet.

Fashion is subjective for everyone, but the more effort you put into your wardrobe, the better you will feel. With these simple fall fashion ideas, you can stay warm and trendy all season.
