Men’s tennis team ranked No. 57 nationally by ITA, holding undefeated record

After cruising to season victories number eight and nine, the Idaho men’s tennis team broke into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team rankings and sit at No. 57 in the country with an undefeated record. The weekly list ranks the nation’s best 75 teams, as voted by Division 1 coaches. “It’s nice to jump into the rankings with the start to the season we’ve had,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “It surprised me a little we entered the rankings so high, and it’s exciting to know that this team has the potential to keep moving up as the season goes on.” The Vandals have been led by the singles play of Cesar Torres and Dmitry Perevoshchikov, who are a combined 17-0 in singles play. Meanwhile, Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar have yet to lose at No. 1 doubles. Idaho’s remaining schedule includes four teams currently ranked in the top 75. Those schools are Oregon, BYU, Oklahoma State and Denver. Idaho visits Montana and Montana State Saturday in Missoula.

Track and field brings in academic honors, ranks No. 10 regionally

For the third straight year, both the men’s and women’s Vandal cross country teams were honored with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team award. The Idaho women, who also won a third consecutive WAC title this fall, posted a 3.5 team GPA. That GPA is No. 10 regionally and No. 53 out of 200 schools in the NCAA. The men posted a 3.19, after finishing third at the conference meet. “These awards speak volumes for the dedication both teams show to the program,” Idaho director of track and field/cross country Wayne Phipps said. “They are able to perform well athletically and still maintain over a 3.0 GPA.” In order to qualify for the award, a team must combine to score at least a 3.0 and field a five-member squad at various NCAA Regional Championships.
